Increasing in sleeves
by: Natalie

What does it mean when my pattern reads:
Inc 1 st at each end of next (3rd: next) and every following 4th row. Then on every following 6th row.
Please help.

---------------------
Hi Natalie,

"Inc 1 st at each end of next (3rd: next)"
This means:
If you’re knitting the first size, increase at each end of the next row.
If you’re knitting the second size (the one in parentheses), increase at each end of the 3rd row instead.
If you’re knitting the third size, again increase the next row.
So you need to check which size you’re knitting. The instruction tells you exactly which row to start your increases on for your size.

"and every following 4th row"
After that first increase, you continue to increase at each end every 4th row.
For example, if you increased on row 3, then you would also increase on rows 7, 11, 15, and so on.

"Then on every following 6th row."
At some point (after you’ve done the 4th-row increases as many times as needed), you switch to increasing at each end of every 6th row instead.
The pattern will usually tell you either:
how many times to increase on the 4th-row schedule before switching, or
until you reach a certain stitch count or measurement.

Hi Heidi,

It does look confusing! I will rewrite the pattern to make it look less confusing;

1st row: K4, *(p2, k2) 5 times, k3; repeat from * 6 times and then *(p2,k2)5 times, k the last 4 sts.

As you can see here, you keep repeating the same 23 stitch-pattern of (p2k2)5 times, k3 throughout the row but instead of ending with 3 sts, you end with 4 sts. This will match the 4 sts at the beginning.

Here is a better breakdown version for you;

1st Row:

Knit 4 stitches. (4sts)

Repeat the following sequence six times:

(P2, K2) × 5, k3. (138sts)

After completing the six repeats, do the following:

(P2, K2) × 5, k4. (24sts)

They should add up to 166 sts.

Happy Knitting!
Ratcha
