"live stitches facing down"

I am working on a shawl and coming to the part that is adding on a border so that there are live stitches on the needles from the first top part of the shawl. The directions say to have the live stitches down and then using a long tail cast on, to cast on 25 stitches to start the border. So what does it mean "live stitches facing down"?

live stitches facing down

Hi Mary,

It seems to me that the pattern wants you to flip your work over so that the top end where the live stitches are now become the bottom end.

The additional cast on will add to the right side of the bottom end where the live stitches are. You have to check which side (right or wrong) the cast on will be worked on.

Thank you for the question and visiting.
