Keeping to pattern while decreasing

Hi, is there a magic formula to work out how to keep to an 8 row pattern while decreasing for the arm shaping? I can quite get my head around following the pattern on each row after losing stitches both ends!
I might be over thinking it but I’ve unpicked it 3 times already! Help will be gratefully appreciated, thank you.

I don't have one. It's helpful to write the pattern down in a piece of paper. Then cross out stitches that you decrease each time you decreasing them.
