How to alter a pattern

I did a sample gauge 28 stitches and 36 rows on # 3 needles. In stockinette stitch it is supposed to be 4 inches.
The length is 4 inches, but the width is 4 &1/2 inches. What do I do to use this pattern?

How to alter the pattern

Hi,

Looks like your yarn is a tiny bigger than suggested. You can try knitting on US#2.5 (3mm) needle instead of size 3 (3.25mm). It should bring the gauge much closer to the pattern suggested. The length might need a row or two extra but it's best to have the width closest to the gauge. You can alway add the length as you go.

Thank you for sending in your question. Wish you the best of your project!

Ratcha
