How do I make a button hole in striped ribbing?

by Lavinia
(Shropshire, UK)

I am finishing off a fairisle cardigan, and am having trouble with making buttonholes in the buttonhole band. The band is in 1x1 striped ribbing, in 2 colours. The instructions say to "yrn, work 2 tog. (to make a buttonhole)". But it does not say what "work" means - is it knit or purl 2 together? Also, it does not say which colour I use to do the "yrn" bit, and which colour I should use to "work 2 tog."

Can you help?

I think it depends on where you button holes are.
I like to do my on the knit rather than purl.

You don't need to change the color when making a button hole. Use the same color and then do yarn round needle and p2tog on the purled ribbing or do yo and k2tog on the knitted ribbing.

Try experiment it and see how it looks. Just make sure the ribbing stay in pattern.

Thanks fo the question and happy knitting!
