Don’t understand casting off at the neck instructions

I am knitting a baby cardigan but on the last part for the back, the neck instructions are really confusing.
I have 18 stitches left.
The instructions say:- at same time as 1st shoulder dec, cast off for neck.
Cast off (8) centre sts, then on neck edge cast off (5) once.

That’s it, but that’s only 13 stitches, what about the other 5?
And how do I cast off stitches in the centre?

Hi Cath,



You work 5 sts, then bind off 8 sts. Work to end.
Next row work five, turn and cast off 5 sts.
Attach yarn to the other end, work 2 rows then bind off 5 sts.
