Confusing instruction in pattern

I downloaded a triangular shawl pattern from Hobbii.com, and it has this instruction for increasing.

Inc 1 st: Put the needle under the chain between the sts and knit it so small holes are made.

I've never seen a reference to a "chain" in knitting so I'm not sure what this means. I know how to make 1 right and left, but this doesn't sound like either.

Confusing instruction in pattern

Hi,

I've never seen instruction like this either. It seems to me that the instruction want this increase to produce a small hole. This is the reason why I'm thinking that this "chain" could refer to a strain of yarn between the stitches of the right and the left needle. So, this is like doing M1R or M1L but without switching the stitch. The end result is an increase with a hole.

Thank you for sharing your question.
