Understanding decreasing instructions from MArtin Storey pattern (BArbican)

Dec 1 st at each end of next 5 5: 7: 7✔: 9 rows, then on foll 4 6: 7:
8: 10
alt rows, then on foll 4th row. 71 75: 81: 89: 95 sts.
Cont straight until armhole meas 19 20: 21: 22: 23 cm, ending
with RS facing for next row.

I put ✔ by the digit 7 I used for rows.

However, the following is not clear to me: 🤷‍♀️then on foll 4 6: 7:
8: 10
alt rows, then on foll 4th row. 71 75: 81: 89:✔ 95 sts.
Cont straight until armhole meas 19 20: 21: 22: 23 cm, ending🤷‍♀️

Is it on the every other 8th row a stitch is decreased?

What is the foll 4th row? Am I right in assuming that I should be left with 89 stitches?

Decrease 1 st on foll 8 alternate rows
by: Ratchadawan

Hi Berni,

I know this is the confusing part for most of knitters. It's a good learning experience.

"then on foll 4 [6: 7: 8: 10] alt rows, then on foll 4th row. 71 [75: 81: 89:✔ 95] sts."

For the instruction above, you do dec 1 st at each end for the following 8 alternate rows. This mean to dec every other rows 8 times. Then on the following 4th row once. And you're right about having 89 sts left at this point.

Thanks for the question and Happy knitting!

Ratcha
