Stitch number confusion

Hi beginning knitter here! I have been trying to start a baby hat project but am confused on the way that the pattern begins. It says to cast on 90 sts (18 sts x 5 repeats per round). In the first round, there is a p3tog and two yo's which I understand cancel each other out. What I am confused about is how the p3tog will affect the number of sts in each round (making it 20 instead of 18). Is it okay for my first round to use more than the 90 co sts? Or am I missing something?

Hi Chole,

The p3tog shouldn't change anything. Like you said, the p3tog and the 2 yarn overs will cancel each other out. The way the pattern is written should work out perfectly. Can you tell me how did you come up with 20 sts? When I look at the first row I see, p2, k2, p3, p3tog, p3, k2, p2, yo, k1, yo. This makes 18 sts.

Don't worry. You can start working on this and you'll see it will all works out.
