Pattern stitch count seems off

by Amelia
(Washington)

The previous row ends with -38 sts.
Then the pattern says:

"Working in Stockinette st, inc 1 st every 3 inches 5 times -48 sts."

By my calculations, inc 1 st every 3 inches 5 times, would only add 5 sts, but the pattern goes from 38 to 48.

Am I reading this wrong? Is the pattern wrong? (This is for a sleeve of a sweater)

increasing sleeve
by: Ratchadawan

Hi Amelia,

What it means is to increase both ends of the sleeve. On each increase rows you should increase 1 st at the beginning and then again at the end of the row. This will create symetrical flares on both sides of the sleeve.

Thank you for the question and Happy New Year!

Ratcha
