Need help with shawl directions

by Cindy
(Pittsburgh)

I picked up a free knitting pattern at Joann fabrics for a knit shawl. I don't know how to translate the pattern! Please help!

Cast on 4 sts (no RS or WS)

1st row: K3. yo. K1. 5 sts
2nd row: K1. P1. yo. K3. 6 sts

I don't understand if you are only casting on 4 sts, what does the 5 sts or the 6 sts, etc. mean??? Does it mean I am casting on an additional 5 stitches???

I understand knit, purl, yarn over.

Thank you!

Cindy

needle help with shawl directions
by: Ratchadawan

Hi Cindy,

the 5sts and 6 sts at the end of row 1 and 2 are there to tell you how many stitches you should have on the needle when you complete that certain row. I know it's confusing because there is no explanation for them. Now that you know, you can ignore them until you're done with your row and ready to count your stitches.

Thanks for the question and visit.
Happy Sunday!

Ratcha
