Knitted hat to big

I just took up knitting and was knitting a hat in the round. I put on 96 stitches but the hat is too big on the bottom any reason why this happen or any way to fix this problem now that the hat is almost finished

Hi Sharon,

The reasons that the hat is too big could be because the gauge is not correct. Either the yarn is too big or the needle is too large. It can be because of the stitches are too loose.

I would suggest picking up stitches along the bottom part and do a few inches of ribbing. Pick up fewer stitches than the cast on and knit 2 x 2 rib. You can try pick up 3 sts out of 4 st. The ribbing will help tighten the brim. This will make the hat looks slouchy though.

Or, you can rip it apart and start it over again but this time with the right gauge.
