How to follow an instruction in a knitting pattern

knitting diagram

knitting diagram

I have 80 stitches the instruction for the next row is:

P1, P2Tog, *C4F, (P2TOG)3 times, rep. from * to last 7 stitches C4F, P2TOG, P1. 57 stitches.

I am confused with this instruction do I P1,P2TOG, C4F,(P2TOG), 3 times & then C4F, (P2TOG) to last 7 stitches? I end up with more than 57 stitches?? HELP

Video Explaining The Pattern

Thanks for the question. I've made an informative video on how to interpret this pattern by drawing a diagram. I thought other knitters might learn from it too.

How to follow an instruction in a knitting pattern

Hi there,

Welcome and thank you for sending in your question. Let's look at the pattern.

"Starting with 80 sts.
P1, P2Tog, *C4F, (P2TOG)3 times, rep. from * to last 7 stitches C4F, P2TOG, P1. 57 stitches."

Okay, First do p1, p2tog. Then forget about them. Now do C4F once, then do p2tog 3 times. Now repeat C4F once and p2tog 3 times until you have 7sts left on the needle. Now do C4F, p2tog, and p1. You should now have 57 sts. on the needle.

I created a rough diagram to show you the lay out of the pattern.
Have fun knitting!

Ratcha
