How to establish a side gusset

I am knitting a diaper bag and in the pattern I did the front and back of bag now it is telling me to establish side gussets, but I dont understand how to do this, please help would like to finish bag. Thank you in advance

How to establish a side gusset

It sounds like the pattern wants you to start making a gusset at one side of the bag. The gussets are the rectangle pieces that go on the side of the bag. So you either knit them separate or pick up certain number of stitches along the side. I'm not sure how the instruction goes but I hope you've got the ideas.

I finished this hat awhile ago but didn’t get a chance to post it. It is my experimental piece. The Pom Pom can be remove when you want to put up a pony tail. Thanks to my models who can tolerates such condition. :)
