How to decrease when there are knit and purl stitches

I think the best way to determine is to look at your remaining sts. You want your pattern to remain the same on the cardigan. So if you want the knit sts to remain then you do k2tog or skp depending on the pattern layout. if you want to keep the purl then you can do p2tog.
