Voliere yarns from Knit Picks

Help with increasing stitches

by Amy
(Ireland)

Hi. I'm a first time knitter and have picked what seems a tricky pattern for my first attempt! It's a striped zebra soft toy and I have successfully managed to cast on, knit a row and then purl a row of 24 stitches. Online tutorials are really helping me out and I understand how to change colours and even how to carry the yarn as well as how to increase stitches. I just don't understand what the next row of instructions means! It says:

inc, k5 4 times (28)

Now, I'm on 24 stitches at the moment, so if I increase by 5 then that will be 29 surely?! And why the repeat 4 times? Sorry, at a total loss.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Help with increasing stitches
by: Ratchadawan

Hi Amy,

I'm exciting for you and congrats on taking on such a challenging work!

I'm glad it tells the number of stitches at the end of this row since the instruction is not really Clear about the increase.

Here what I would do;

*knit into front and back of a stitch, k5; Then repeat from * again 3 more times. You should end up with 28 sts.

If you don't like the way "knit into front and back of a st" look, then try different way of increase like pick up yarn between the stitches and knit.

Repeating 4 times is a set up for other rows and it's important for this pattern.

Thanks for the question and visiting.
Take care,
Ratcha
