Hello! I am stuck on a part of a dog sweater I am making. The instructions say: Next row: Rib 17 sts, turn, leaving rem sts on a stitch holder or spare needle, cont only on the first set of sts for the under section.K1, P1

I have completed the 17 sts and turned my work and I am unsure what stitches are the “remaining” ones. I have 17 then 3 that were cast off. Then 59 and 3 cast off then 17.

Please help.
Thank you! Amanda

Hi Amanda,

It sounds like you're working on a dog sweater with a split for the legs. Here's how you can proceed:

Rib 17 stitches: You've completed this step, so you should have 17 stitches on your needle.

Turn, leaving remaining stitches on a stitch holder or spare needle: This means you'll turn your work as if you were at the end of a row, but instead of continuing to work across all the stitches, you'll stop after working the 17 stitches. The remaining stitches (the ones you haven't worked on yet) should be placed on a stitch holder or spare needle to keep them safe while you work on the first set of stitches.

Continue only on the first set of stitches for the under section: With the 17 stitches you just worked, you'll now work back and forth on these stitches only. The pattern specifies to knit 1, purl 1 ribbing, so you'll knit 1 stitch, then purl 1 stitch, and repeat this across the 17 stitches. This forms the under section of the sweater.

After completing this section, you'll likely be instructed to rejoin the remaining stitches (the ones on the stitch holder or spare needle) and work them separately to create the other side of the split for the legs.

Hope this is helpful.
Thanks for asking.

Ratcha
