Can I shorten a machine-knitted sweater I received as a gift?

by Sally Stubbs
(Denver, CO, USA)

I just received a gift of a very pretty machine-knitted sweater, but it's about 5 inches too long! The bottom of the sweater is ribbed, but it's not important to me to keep the ribbed pattern.

Is it possible to have it shortened? Should I take it to a dressmaker? Or a knitting shop? I haven't knitted in over 30 years, so would not attempt it myself. Thank you for helping me!!

Shorten a sweater
by: Ratchadawan

Hi,

Sorry for the late reply. I’m on a road trip and just got a chance to open my mail.

Absolutely, you can shorten the sweater. It sounds very beautiful. Check with your local yarn shop to see if there’s anyone available and willing to do the job. If you take it to alteration shop the will probably just cut it and seam with sewing machine. I find knittingparadise.com has many knitting groups and you Ming be able to find someone near by.

Let me know if you have any success finding anyone. If you are unable then I will be happy to help.

Ratcha
