how do I read a pattern?

I’m a beginner. My scarf pattern says cast on 3 then k2, yo, pm, k1, yo, k1 (5 sts). How do I continue past k2, yo, if I only have 3 stitches? Do I have to cast on more to have 5?

Hi there,

You cast on 3 stitches. Then you begin row 1 with;

k1, yo, place marker, k1, yo, k1. (your note above was a typo for k2 instead of k1.) -- with a total of 5 stitches counting the yarn over sts as well.

It's true that you only have 3 sts to start with. Then as you move on to row 1, you add 2 yarn over stitches which make the total of 5 sts.

Don't worry, go ahead and try it. it will all work out. There is not need to cast on anymore.

Thank you for sending in your question. Have a great day!
