How to make loop on a hat

Question

I have a pattern for a hat that I want to knit on circular needles. The hat has a button on the side. I don't understand the first row.

The pattern says:
Row 1 (right side) working in rows, bind off 8 sts in knit for button loop, knit across.

I know how to bind off but I do not understand what it means by working in rows?

Can you help?

Answer

It means to knit flat back and forth in rows at the first part of the pattern. Even though you're using circular needles, you can knit it flat just like on straight needle. What I'm guessing is you will join stitches in rounds after you complete the button part.

So, go ahead and bind off and knit to the end of the row and follow the rest of the instruction.

If you still need help, you can send me more pattern and I will work it out.

Thank you for the question. I hope this helps you.
